Father K's January "Wii Related Round Up..."

First of all, an apology to those of you who occasionally stop by the place... There's been very little to read of late... There are a number of reasons for this, however. Firstly, the old Wii has been somewhat eclipsed by the arrival of the 360 here in Krishna Towers, with Bioshock totally consuming all my gaming time of late... I've completed it now, and I have to say it has been one of the bestgaming experiences I have ever had... For a nice video review of this lovely game, look here...

The Wii has made a triumphant return of late however, with my first taste of playing Umbrella Chronicles co-op with a friend and two Wii zappers, and I have to say it's great fun! The only irksome thing about the experience would have to be that playing with the Zapper actually makes the game harder! How so? Two reasons really! Firstly is having to curl your finger around the Zapper to get to the 'A' button, vital for picking up herbs, first aid sprays, Umbrella memos and weapon upgrades... It feels awkward and uncomfortable while your other finger is on the trigger.

Secondly, shaking the Wiimote to fend off zombies that have you in their clutches, and also as a means of avoiding boss attacks and getting through QTE's is vital to progression in the game. But plug that Wiimote into the Zapper and it becomes impossible. The whole thing becomes very frustrating and led yesterday to me and my friend abandoning the game before we even reached the Spencer Mansion. Disappointing really...

Still, Link's Crossbow Training has shown how perfectly the Zapper can work as a Light Gun, and as this genre is one of my favourite in gaming, I'm not giving up on it just yet... With that thought in mind, it is wih some excitement that I look forward to the Wii's next two Light Gun offerings, Ghost Squad and House Of The Dead 2&3 Return (Please click on the titles to go to Sega's Official Sites for each game...)

Ghost Squad is a Confidential Mission style anti-terrorist shoot 'em up. Your mission is to save the world by blasting as many of the pesky so and so's as possible. And they rather obligingly throw themselves into your path, so you can blast away to your heart's content. The arcade perfect port looks very promising indeed!

House Of The Dead 2 & 3 Return is something of a lazy port, combining as it does HOTD2 (first seen on The Dreamcast) and HOTD3 (first appearing on the original Xbox.) No extra features, no graphically polished original HOTD (one of the Saturn's finest games, and the title which kicked off the franchise...) Is it worth your money then? Well yes and no... I won't be parting with any money for a full price purchase, I'll wait till the price comes down... And I won't allow myself to buy it until Umbrella Chronicles is well and truly completed. But as it's perhaps the greatest Light Gun game ever, I'll definitely be buying it at some point...

In fact it looks like 2008 is going to be a bit of a stellar year for the Wii with Street Fighter 4, No More Heroes, NiGHTs and even a sequel to the marvellous, (though much maligned) Red Steel. Watch this space!

I doubt I can trust IGN after they gave Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed low scores. How the hell could they give Folklore a better score than those two games. It is absurd.

Trust yourself. Watch videos, play demos, etc... That's what I do.

Anyway, congratulations on beating Bioshock, Father! I was afraid that you would eventually leave the game half-trough, which would be a pitty since this is such an awesome game. I too already beat it ("beat it", sounds like I punched the game or something...), but I'm considering on playing it again in the future to complete some achievements and watch the "good" ending.

By the way, what's your gamercard?

I never played that Dreamcast game, but Power Stone 2 was my favorite Dreamcast game.

Is IGN your favorite site father?

I trust IGN hugely Funnyman! After all, they re-opened IGN Dreamcast just as the next gen consoles were coming out...

Why thank you Nebacha... But what did I do next? started re-playing Shenmue and bought a bunch of Saturn games... Is there any hope? LOL!

Powerstone is a classic Funnyman... Do you have it for the PSP?

Why thank you Gnome... Ah yes SF4... A must-buy methinks...

Judging from the scores they have given to games, I don't have faith in IGN. I don't trust Gamespot either after the whole Jeff fiasco. They lost their credibility after they fired him. No, I don't have Power Stone 2 because I doubt anyone wants to play Power Stone 2 anymore. It was my favorite multiplayer game, but there is no point in playing now when they is nobody to play with or against.

That last sentence should have read "It was my favorite multiplayer game, but there is no point in playing now when there is nobody to play with or against." Sorry, it difficult to drink and type simultaneously.

Yay for a new post! :D

The Wii is gonna be looking good here in a while, starting with No More Heroes!!!

The Sports Satirist said...

I have never played Confidential Mission, but it has to be better than the catastrophe known as Time Crisis 4.

Junlee said...

Oh and is SF4 actually coming to Wii?

The Sports Satirist said...

Street Fighter 4 has not been announced for the Wii. I hope it comes out for the 360 or PS3.

fatherkrishna said...

If you liked Virtua Cop, you'd like Confidential Mission Funnyman!

Wow! No SF4 on the Wii eh? I just assumed it was coming out on the Wii because of a.) The graphics (which could easily work on the PS2 or even Dreamcast)

and b.) Because I first heard about it over at J's place and most of his gaming attention is for the Wii... How embarassing! LOL!

The Sports Satirist said...

Why do you care if Street Fighter 4 comes out for the Wii junlee? Wouldn't you rather play it on a PS3?

Junlee said...

I have both, and yes I would actually rather play it on the PS3. (unless it does come out for the Wii and have some ridiculous controls)

I was just wondering that's all.

When it comes to multiconsole games, I have noticed that the Wii version is the one that is inferior. The exclusive games are where the Wii is successful.

Junlee said...

Yeah that's true. The exclusives usually do shine on the Wii. It's pretty much what Nintendo is good at!

The Sports Satirist said...

The Wii should forget about multiconsoles games altogether. There is a much wider audience for Wii exclusives. It is a much better from a business standpoint for the Wii to focus on exclusives.

fatherkrishna said...

Ah! But a lot of developers want a slice of Wii action! Hence the seriously huge amount of bad Wii games out there, it's up to us Wii owners to be very selective and ignore the dross...

The Sports Satirist said...

They might want a slice, but the slice turns out to be lame. The multiconsole games sell poorly in contrast to the Wii exclusives. Nobody wins with these multiconsole games. It is a lose-lose situation for both Nintendo and Wii owners. The biggest money makers for Nintendo are the Wii exclusives.

I hated Confidential mission. That game was awful. I exchanged it at GAME the same week I bought it.
